Present methods of bioremediation of contaminated groundwater generally involve the introduction of bioaugmented microorganisms in situ into a source of contaminated groundwater. In many cases, some type of nutrient medium or growth promoting substrate is added to the groundwater to support the desired in situ growth of the introduced bioaugmented microorganisms. The above-described methods of bioremediation of contaminated groundwater are generally only applicable in situ if the nutrients in the contaminated groundwater are in excess of the requirements for the introduced microorganisms. However, in many cases, the conditions of excess nutrients in contaminated groundwater may only be achieved at the time of in situ introduction of the microbial consortia, and the in situ growth of the consortia may be inhibited by the lack of nutrients in the contaminated groundwater at later times. The above-described methods of bioremediation of contaminated groundwater also frequently result in the introduction of unwanted organisms into the contaminated aquifer. Solutions of the above problems have been suggested as discussed below. For example, U.S. Pat. No. 4,982,829 discloses an apparatus for in situ bioremediation of contaminated groundwater. An annular permeable bed of porous stone is provided in which a bioremediation substrate medium is contained. An inlet plenum is provided adjacent the bed to supply a mixed contaminated groundwater to the annular permeable bed. A plurality of outlets are provided in the annular permeable bed of porous stone. A plurality of effluent channels are provided in the annular permeable bed of porous stone which connect the inlet plenum to the outlets of the annular permeable bed. The effluent channels connect the inlet plenum to selected outlets. The permeable bed of porous stone is permeable to groundwater. U.S. Pat. No. 5,269,943 discloses an in situ treatment of contaminated groundwater. An annular permeable bed of permeable porous rock is provided in which a bioremediation substrate medium is contained.
